A Festival of Flavors
The
Mindanao Culinary Festival brings the skill and talent competition
among professionals and students from the hotel and restaurant
industry a notch higher
Something grand’s been cooking in Mindanao! Now on its seventh
year, the Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF), led by Davao’s
Department of Tourism and Nestle Food Services, recently held
its annual skill and talent competition among the professionals/
students from the hotel and restaurant industry.
During the four-day event, founding chair Margie Moran-Floirendo
enthused, “There’s a sense of accomplishment here.
We have sustained it. We’ve always thought big and we’re
still here.”
Making the event brighter were luminaries from Manila— Chefs
J. Gamboa, Norbert Gandler, father and son tandem Gene and Gino
Gonzalez, Tomas Wenger and Penk Tan.
Held at NCCC Convention Center, this year’s event saw an
overwhelming number of participants – 235 in the Professional
Category and 498 in the Student Category, which comprised a total
of 27 establishments and 19 schools from all over Mindanao. Raised
to Hall of Fame were Marco Polo Hotel (Professional Category)
and the University of Mindanao (Student Category) for being Overall
Champions for three consecutive years.
Besides the awarding ceremony, highlights of the event included
the front act by the Kaliwat Theater Collective, and the opening
of the Indigenous Food Pavilion, which showcased the specialty
cuisines of different cultural communities, and the Mango Pavilion,
which displayed freshly-picked mango fruits and import-quality
by-products.
